Honey bees speed limit 15 mph (24 km/h)

A honey bee flies at about15 mph(24 km/h) but they are capable of flying faster at over 27 mph. There is now increasing evidence that honey bees regulate their ground speed in flight by holding constant the speed at which the image of the environment moves across the eye (optic flow). (this may be related to knowing/communicating the distance to food sources etc) so even when they are flying with the wind they compensate and fly slower to stay flying with a ground speed of 15 mph and vice versa.
