Anthony Rigby, Out of the Box: Swarms and their collection
This talk follows on from the problems of swarms in buildings described in February.
Anthony unexpectedly became a very ignorant beekeeper 38 years ago, when his wife gave him a fully stocked WBC hive (plus a suit, smoker & hive tool) as a surprise 40th Birthday present. He was a member of NSBKA until the establishment of the apiary at Pimhill. He then moved to Oswestry BKA, which he chaired for over 25 years. He has never bought a queen or nuc and has relied totally on splits and collecting swarms. Over the years these have been from as far away as Whitchurch, Clive and Attingham! At one time running 20+ hives but trying now to keep below ten. Learning how bees behave in the wild goes a long way towards understanding how to keep them in a box
